Keep your passwords safe!
How to use Trezor Password Manager
Did you know that Trezor can also be used as a very secure variant of a password manager?
Protecting our passwords has become an integral part of our lives, you simply can’t live without passwords. You need it for emails, socials, work, government, education and more, in your everyday life.
One of the best and most secure practices is to generate long, random passwords, consist of lowercase, uppercase, numbers and symbols. Ideally for every account separately. And that’s exactly what Trezor Password Manager makes possible.
Compared to the other versions of the password managers, it is less practical, since it depends on physical access to the Trezor, but it is a safer option. Most password managers work by having a master password that is used to access all of your credentials information. The obvious problem with this method is that if your master password is compromised, then all your passwords are compromised. Trezor Password Manager uses a recovery seed to store all of you login information. This recovery seed is stored completely offline. Each password is encrypted separately, stored on Dropbox in an encrypted form using encryption keys derived and safely stored in your Trezor. The passwords are selectively decrypted on demand when needed. It is not possible for anyone else to access your passwords nor to make any edits.
The setup of Trezor password manager is an easy process:
1. Install the Trezor Password Manager extension in your favorite browser.
2. Log in to your Dropbox account
3. Connect Trezor device and enter your PIN
4. Enable Trezor Password Manager on your Trezor device
5. Use it!
Passwords are saved in a folder /Dropbox/Apps/TREZOR Password Manager/ in an .pswd format. I highly recommend backing up this file regularly.
For better clarity and organization of passwords, you can use tags that can simplify your searches. It’s up to you if you use Trezor Password Manager only for your most sensitive passwords, or if you get into the habit of using it daily, like I do.
Keep in mind that all data stored on your Trezor device is derived from your recovery seed, which is an essential part of your wallet backup.
